Mrs. Johanna Hook Funeral Thursday
Mrs. Johanna Hook, 84, died Sunday afternoon in Mason City after an extended illness.
Mrs. Hook spent most of her lifetime in Grundy county, including 20 years on a farm in Pleasant Valley township and more than 30 years in Grundy Center.
Services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the United Methodist church in Grundy Center. Burial will be in the family plot in the E.U.B. church cemetery in Pleasant Valley township. Rev. Herbert Bryant will officiate.
Mrs. Hook had been confined to a wheel chair since suffering a stroke five years ago, and had lived in a nursing home since that time, near her daughter Lois, and family, Dr. and Mrs. Jerome Biebesheimer in Mason City. Other children are Henry, Davenport; Paul, Singapore; Genevieve (Mrs. William Cone), Fort Dodge; and Mrs. Esther Burt, Pompano Beach, Fla. She is also survived by one brother, Harm DeBuhr of Ackley, and one nephew, Edward DeBuhr of Wilmington, Delaware, who was reared in Mrs. Hook's home.
Mrs. Hook is also survived by 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Johanna DeBuhr was born on a farm in German township in Grundy County. She took advanced training at Ellsworth College, Iowa Falls, and taught rural schools for several years in German and Pleasant Valley townships.
Active in church work most of her life, she taught Sunday School classes for more than 50 years, some of them at the United Methodist church in Grundy Center, where she was a lifetime member of the WSCS.
For many years she was employed as a cosmetics representative in Grundy Center.
She was married to Barney Hook February 2, 1909. He and two children, Woodrow and Carol preceded her in death.
