Rites Held For Clarence Conrad
Clarence "Barney" Conrad, 71, of Conrad died Friday morning, July 27, at his home. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home chapel at Marshalltown with the Rev. Darrell Mitchell in charge. Burial was in the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church Cemetery northeast of Wellsburg.
Mr. Conrad was born March 4, 1908 in Tama County, the son of Henry W. Conrad and Elizabeth Grassman. He was married to Helen Evert Aukes Huisman on August 31, 1964, at Toledo.
He was reared and educated in the Lamoille area and later moved to Marshalltown where he spent 30 years with Swift and Co., retiring in 1966.
He served with the Army in World War II and received the Purple Heart for wounds. Mr. Conrad attended the Grace United Methodist Church in Marshalltown and was a member of the Moose Lodge.
Surviving are his wife, six step-children, Mrs. Douglas (Virginia) Geerdes of Wellsburg, Virgil Aukes of Carrollton, Texas, Mrs. Keith (Evelyn) DeNeui of Des Moines, Wayne Aukes of Wellsburg, Mrs. Kempton (Lavonne) Walbaum of Marshalltown, and Dale Aukes of Bangor; 17 step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Stella Coleman of Garwin and Mrs. Esther Hamiel of Ferguson. He was preceded in death by his parents and two step-great-granddaughters.
Mrs. Cordes Speas of Marshalltown sang "I Won't Have To Cross Jordan Alone", and "Follow Me" at the service. Pallbearers were step-grandsons, Wade Aukes, Duane Murra of Wellsburg, Jeffrey Walbaum of Marshalltown, Lon DeNeui, Tony Harris and Steve Mayer of Des Moines. Honorary pallbearers were John Geerdes of Statesboro, Georgia; Dean Aukes and John Aukes of Carrollton, Texas; Mr. Moyer, Mr. Petrie, and Mr. West, all of Marshalltown.
Attending the services from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Evert of Edgely, North Dakota, Mrs. Lorene Evert of St. Cloud, Minnesota and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Aukes of Carrollton, Texas.
