Petrus Tjabring, Sr.
Petrus Tjabrings Sr., was born November 8, 1846, at Niewe Schans, Netherlands. In 1884 he came with his family to America, settling first at Aplington, Iowa, where he lived for a number of years. After this he moved to Grundy County where he remained for a number of years on a farm, where upon he came back to Butler County, where he spent his remaining years; during the last 18 of which he was a resident of the town of Aplington.
In the year 1867 he married Miss Hilka Blau. To this union five children, four sons and one daughter were born, all of whom have preceded their father in death except one son. His son John Tjabrings, died May 12th, 1931, five days prior to his demise. About 24 years ago his wife was taken from his side by death, during all these years he lived along. Mr. Tjabrings always enjoyed good health, with the exception that during the last years his hearing was impaired. He was of a jovial disposition and was well liked by his neighbors and fellowmen. Being at one time a member of the St. Petri Church, southwest of Aplington, he had his membership transferred in 1917 to the local Reformed church of which he remained a faithful member up to the time of his departure. He loved the kingdom of God and was a faithful attendant at public worship as long as his hearing was good. He departed this life May the 17th, at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 9 days. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 19th at the Reformed church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Henry Pannkuk. Burial was made at the St. Petri Church cemetery beside his wife. He leaves to mourn his departure, one son Ben Tjabrings, of Dumont; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, besides other relatives.
