Mrs. Meinders Dead

One of the Old, Early-day Residents of Grundy County

Martha Marten Meinders, nee Wientjes, was born on the 7th day of January, 1843, at Lammertsfehn, Eastfriesland, Germany. At the age of 18 years, in 1861, she came to this country with her parents, and they made their first home in German Valley, Illinois. Three years later, in 1864, the family went along with the flow of emigration to Iowa, and settled on a farm in German Township. She was twice married. On August 6, 1865, the young widow married a second time, united in wedlock with Uffe Meinders, with whom she lived many years. Together they experienced both joy and sorrow. This union gave them eleven children, five sons and six daughters, of whom four sons and two daughters survive the father and now the mother. They are: Brunke, Martin, John and Meint, all of Aplington, and Mrs. Lauterbach of Parkersburg and Mrs. Tjaden, of White, S. Dakota. She died Wednesday, July 2. Services were held by Rev's. Schmucker, Kicker and Zwindler, and burial in German Valley at St. Peter's church.
