Irene Frieda Finger, age 85, of Ackley, Iowa, was born the daughter of John and Lenora (DeVries) Janssen on August 1, 1928, on the farm near Ackley. She attended German Township #2 through the eighth grade.

Irene was united in marriage to Elwin Edwin Finger on November 6, 1948, in the parsonage at the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Wellsburg, Iowa. They made their home and farmed in Grundy County south of Aplington. Irene spent the majority of her adult working life as a housewife and mother. She also found time to work at the hardware stores in Aplington and Ackley, cleaned homes, and for many years worked at The Presbyterian Village. She also helped Elwin on the farm milking cows, raising chickens and tending her garden.

Irene was an active member of St. Peter’s Country Church, teaching Sunday School and attended Gleaners woman’s group. Irene enjoyed bowling league, but mostly she is remembered for her cooking and baking. Her six layer dinner and her cream filled cupcakes will be missed greatly.

Irene died Sunday, March 23, 2014 at The Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa. Irene is preceded in death by her husband, Elwin on November 16, 2007; two sons, Trent Finger on October 30, 1979 and Eldon Finger on August 23, 1982; a great-grandson, Dylan Richtsmeier; and her parents.

Irene is survived by one son, Dale Finger of Forest City, Iowa; three daughters, Judy (David) Kuper, Karla Kramer and Lorie Harrenstein all of Ackley; seven grandchildren, Chad (Deb) Kuper, Kristi (Trent) Ploeger, Randy Kramer, Micah Finger, Tyrel Finger, Casie and Anne Harrenstein; ten great-grandchildren, Lauren, Colin and Kyle Kuper, James and Megan Ploeger, Tylen and Hailea Finger, Hannah and Mattie Richtsmeier and Trendon DeGroote; one sister, Jan (LaVerne) Sheeler of Ackley.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 27, 2014, at St. Peter’s Country Church, with burial in the St. Peter’s Cemetery, both in rural Wellsburg, Iowa

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Chapel in Aplington, (319)347-6275, and one hour before services at the church.
