Tena Meyer, age 99, of Dike, Iowa, was born the daughter of Fred and Dorothy (Boelman) Bolhuis, on May 6, 1915, in rural Grundy County near Dike. She attended Beaver Township schools #4 and #7 in Grundy County. Tena was a housekeeper for various families before her marriage.

On August 30, 1937, Tena was united in marriage with Harm Meyer, Jr. at the Reformed Church of Stout parsonage in Stout, Iowa. They lived with Tena’s parents for a few years and then made their home on a farm northwest of Stout. In 1967, they moved to their family farm just east of Stout. Tena helped with the farm chores and also worked at the turkey hatchery in Dike for a short time.

Tena was a member of the Reformed Church of Stout, where she was an active member of the Reformed Church Women’s group. She enjoyed gardening and working outdoors. Her greatest joy was time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Tena died Sunday, November 2, 2014, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of almost 67 years, Harm; one granddaughter in infancy, Susan Kay Cordes; two sisters, Etta Syhlman and Minnie Gersema; three brothers, Lawrence, Jerry and Henry Bolhuis.

Tena is survived by one son, Mervan (Linda) Meyer of Dike; one daughter, Velma (Virgil) Cordes of Stout; six grandchildren, Barbara (Jason) Johnson, Lisa (Greg) Melcher, Gary (Kim) Cordes, Sheila Cordes, Chris (Steph) Meyer, and Shawn Meyer; seven great-grandchildren, Nicole (Kendall) Kannegieter, Mike (Tessa) Nisius, Casey Melcher, Alyssa Cordes and Bo Cordes, Kolbe Meyer and Kendyl Meyer; eight great-great-grandchildren, Kayla Nisuis, Kaitien Nisius, Kaeley Nisius, Kaibree Nisuis, Kaselynn Nisuis, Kamden Kannegieter, Karsen Kannegieter and Keagen Kannegieter and one sister-in-law, Irene Bolhuis.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 6, 2014, at Stout Reformed Church, with burial at Stout Cemetery both in Stout, Iowa.

Visitation will be Wednesday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, and one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
