George Arends was born Dec. 11, 1885, near Dike, Iowa, the son of Dude and Ella Harms Arends. He married Pattie Berends in Stout, Iowa, March 1, 1917. They farmed most of their lives near Dike, except for eight years when they lived in New Hartford, retiring in 1962. He then made his home with his daughter, Rose. For the past several years he had been living in a nursing home.

Mr. Arends entered into rest Wednesday night, July 17, at the Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer at the age of 88.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Rose) Brown of Dysart, Iowa; two sons, Dick Arends of Clarence, Iowa, and Paul Arends of Huntsville, Alabama; one foster daughter, Mrs. Dora Borchers of 719 Riehl, Waterloo; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1961, three sons in 1929, one great-grandchild, his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were Saturday, July 20, at 10:00 a.m. at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. Officiating were Eric S. McCullough and Leonard DeBuhr. Duet by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Orr, "Life at Best is Very Brief" and "Leaning On the Everlasting Arms." Pallbearers: Hans Syhlman, George Viet Jr., Alvin Syhlman, Louis Bakker, Rodney Kendrick, Gerald Maifield.

Interment was in the cemetery in Stout, Iowa.
