George Syhlman Died Friday

George Syhlman of Stout died Friday at the Allen Memorial hospital. He had been in failing health for the past 15 months and passed away at the hospital in Waterloo on Friday evening, Nov. 26th, at the age of 61 years and 25 days.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Stout Reformed Church with Rev. Peter Koenen of Aplington officiating in the absence of the regular pastor. Interment was made in the Stout Cemetery under the direction of the Engelkes Funeral Home of Parkersburg.

George Syhlman, son of William and Trena Arends Syhlman was born on October 31, 1910 in Grundy County. He was united in marriage on March 29, 1939 at Salem Lutheran Church with Miss Jennie Aswegan. He was employed as a tenant farmer in Grundy county for five years and spent three years as a carpenter before they moved to Stout 24 years ago when he became an employee of the Viking Pump Co. in Cedar Falls. He served two years as a member of the town council in Stout and then served for 16 years as Mayor. He was a member of the Stout Reformed Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dude. Surviving are his wife, one son, Gary and one daughter, Shirley (Mrs. Ray Wilson) both of Grundy Center; four grandchildren; six brothers, Verb of Aplington; Bill and Harm of Cedar Falls; Hans of Gladbrook; and John and Alvin of Dike; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Everts of Parkersburg and Mrs. Ella Everts of Cedar Falls.
