Mrs. J. Bergman Dies Tuesday At Nursing Home

Mrs. Jacob Bergman died Tuesday morning at the Countryside Nursing Home in Grundy Center. She was 90 years old and resided in Grundy county during all of her lifetime. She was in failing health during part of the past year and was a patient in the Grundy hospital six weeks before she was taken to the Nursing Home.

The body was taken to the Engelkes funeral home in Grundy Center, where funeral arrangements are being made. There will be a prayer service at the funeral home at 12:15 on Friday, after which the body will be taken to the Reformed church at Stout where the service will be held. The service will be conducted by Rev. John Hoekstra, pastor of the church. Burial will be in the cemetery at Stout. Mrs. Bergman was the last charter member still living of the Reformed church at Stout.

Was Born on Farm in Pleasant Valley Township
Mrs. Bergman was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Meester, one of the early residents of Pleasant Valley township. She was one of 14 children in the Jacob Meester family. She grew up on a Pleasant Valley township farm. Her maiden name was Susie Meester. She was born Oct. 23rd, 1873.

Susie Meester and Jacob Bergman were married March 8, 1894. During the first ten years of their married life they lived on a farm near Fern in Beaver township. After that they moved to a farm in Fairfield township. Mr. and Mrs. Bergman retired from the farm and moved to the town of Stout in 1942, where he died two years later.

Mr. and Mrs. Bergman were the parents of 13 children. Nine of them are still living. They are Joe, Grundy Center; Hillerd, of Reinbeck; George, Dike; Andrew, Ted, Mrs. Charles Nevenhoven and Mrs. Oscar Miller reside in Fairfield township with a New Hartford address; Mrs. Wm. Dreesman, Grundy Center; Mrs. George Pothast, Dike.

There are 33 surviving grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Other surviving members of the family are three brothers, John E. Meester, Parkersburg; Harry and Andrew Meester, Holland. Nettie Meester, a sister, resides at Holland. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons and two daughters, four brothers and two sisters. Three children died in infancy.
