Oldest Woman In County Dies

Mrs. John Hempen, who was believed to be the oldest woman in Grundy county, died at 10:30 Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Konken, 3 miles east of Stout. Had she lived until April 25th, she would have been 97 years old.

Funeral services will be held at the home at 12:30 today and at one o'clock at the Reformed church in Stout. Burial will be by the side of the husband in the cemetery at Stout. Rev. W. J. Heyenga, pastor of the church at Stout, will officiate at the service.

Was Native of Germany
Mrs. Hempen was a native of Germany. She was born in that country April 25, 1849, and she grew up there. In 1868, she and John Hempen were married in Germany. That was 77 years ago. They lived in that country until 1884, when they came to America and to Grundy county. They located on a farm in Beaver township and resided there until they moved to the town of Stout about 30 years ago. Her husband died in 1933. Two years later Mrs. Hempen went to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Konken, and family where she spent the remaining years of her life. Death was due to infirmities of old age.

Surviving are one son and five daughters. The son George resides on a farm near Hudson. The daughters are Mrs. Redenius from California, Mrs. Herman Meyer from Minnesota, Mrs. Herman Volberding, Dike, Mrs. Nettie Hessenius, Stout, and Mrs. Henry Konken.
