Mrs. Hilko Arends Dies Following Two Years' Illness

Mrs. Emma Arends, nee Groen, was born Dec. 11, 1885, near Baileyville, Ill. When about three years old she came with her parents to Grundy county, Iowa.

On March 31, 1908, she was united in marriage to Hilko Arends. To this union were born two children.

Two years ago last May Mrs. Arends became afflicted with varicose veins and was confined to her bed for four months. Since that time, even though not really sick, her condition was not satisfactory. Last Tuesday morning her condition became of an alarming nature and on Wednesday morning when her condition became more serious, she was quite suddenly taken out of the realm of this life. She reached the age of 51 years, 6 months, 5 days.

She leaves to mourn her bereaved husband, Hilko Arends; two children, Mae and Edward; her aged father, Jacob Groen of Aplington; three sisters: Mrs. Harm VanHauen of Parkersburg, Mrs. Henry Peters of Grundy Center, Mrs. Arend Goldhorn of Parkersburg; two brothers; Christ of Chatfield, Minn., and Louis of Stewartville, Minn.; besides other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Reformed church of Stout after a brief service at the house, conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. J. Heyenga. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot on the church cemetery.
