Old Settler Called
Roelf DeVries Passed Away at His Home in Stout Last Friday, Funeral Held Tuesday.
Roelf DeVries was born at Nemoer, Germany, July 6, 1851 and passed away at his home in Stout, Iowa, Friday noon, Oct. 2, 1914, at the age of 63 years, 2 months and 26 days.
The first fifteen years of Mr. DeVries' life were spent in his native country of Germany. He came to America in 1866, settling in Ogle county, Illinois. In 1875 he came to Iowa where he has since resided, following the business of a farmer. He has been a resident of Grundy county for a number of years.
In 1876 the deceased was united in marriage to Minnie DeVries. To this union seven children were born, six of whom survive, with the mother, to mourn the loss of the husband and father. One son, John, preceded his father into the beyond. Three boys and three girls survive. They are Ippe, Henry and Ralph and Fannie, Dena and Lizzie.
For a number of years Mr. DeVries lived in Lincoln township but two years ago he rented his farm and moved to Stout.
The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at Stout, Rev. Fred Reverts conducting the service, and the remains were laid to rest in the Stout Cemetery. In the passing of Mr. DeVries his community lost a good citizen and an excellent neighbor.
