Old Citizen Passes Away
As a result of a wound inflicted by a rooster, Christian Becker, 85 years of age, fifty-one years a resident of Grundy county, the oldest continuous resident in point of years within the county, died at his home seven miles southeast of Ackley Saturday last.
Becker had gone to the barn-yard to catch a fowl; while in the act, the foul tore the flesh in the palm of the hand with its spurs; nothing serious was expected to develop as a result of the wound, within a day the swelling had reached the fore-arm; at this stage a physician was summoned; as much aid as was possible to give was given, but from the first no encouragement was given, for the old gentleman's recovery; the arm continued to swell until nearly twice its natural size. The blood had been poisoned, the system permeated.
Christian Becker had been a resident of Grundy county fifty-one years; he went there almost directly on coming to this country from Germany, for an equal number of years he lived on the same 160 acre farm that he took from the government when the prospects and possibilities of Grundy were among the uncertainties, this was sufficient for him he did not care for more.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Agena of the German Presbyterian church of German township.
