Anna Sarah Harken, 84, of Parkersburg, passed away Friday, April 13 at her apartment in Parkersburg.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 17 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Parkersburg. Rev. Dr. D. H. Palm officiated. Burial was in the West Friesland Cemetery, Ackley.

Anna was born the daughter of Claus and Mary Schaap Harken on March 23, 1917, in Butler County near Ackley. She received her education in a rural school near her home.

Anna moved to the Parkersburg area and later to the City of Parkersburg. She purchased her own home on 4th Street and was employed as a cook in Polly's Cafe for 22 years, retiring in 1990. After she retired she moved to her present apartment on 5th Street.

Her hobbies were entertaining her friends, going out to eat and playing cards. One great nephew and three great nieces and their children always called Anna, Grandma. They were together for most holidays and she loved them like her own grandchildren.

Bethel Lutheran Church and the congregation were very important to Anna. She attended Sunday services faithfully and Circle I. She also spent many hours at the church making quilts for the homeless and needy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Isebrandt, Jake and Will Harken; one sister, Grace Bertram; one great niece; and one great nephew.

Anna is survived by two nephews, Eugene Harken and his wife Romona of Aplington and Donald Harken and his wife Betty of Ackley; and one niece, Marlys Hemmen and her husband Calvin of Durant.

Schwartz Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
