Jan Eertmoed, 91, Passed Away Tuesday Funeral Services Friday

Jan A. Eertmoed, an old and respected citizen of this community, passed away at his home west of Wellsburg, at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18. He had suffered a stroke just a week before his death. He was 91 years and six months old at the time of his passing away.

Mr. Eertmoed was born in Germany on May 15, 1856 and came to this country with his parents when a small boy. His only sister, Mrs. Abram Jaspers, who lived in this community, passed away 28 years ago.

He was united in marriage with Anna Ross on March 12, 1879, and she died March 21, 1938. Seven children were born to this union, three of whom are now living in this community, Alle Eertmoed and Mrs. C. Doolard of Steamboat Rock and Mrs. Henry J. Lindaman of Wellsburg. The other four children have passed away.

Mr. Eertmoed had lived in this community all his life where he had been engaged in farming. For the past few years his daughter, Mrs. Henry J. Lindaman and family have lived on the home place and provided a home for her father.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 21 at 1:00 o'clock at the home and later at the First Christian Reformed Church west of Wellsburg. Services will be in charge of the pastor, Rev. J. VandeKieft and interment will be in the church cemetery.

Following is an article published in the Herald on his 90th birthday a year and a half ago.

This is the first season in 81 years of farming that he has not been out in the field planting corn. As a lad he had to help his father plant corn by hand, being the only boy in the family. In later years he did it to show his grandchildren and great-grandchildren that "Grand Pop" could still do it.

Mr. Eertmoed has spent his entire life on the farm but not may of his old neighbors are left who were farming when he first started. The ones still living are John Geerdes who is noted for driving the grain binder for many successive years, and John Rah and Lewis Meints who have all retired but are living on their farms. Henry Geerdes who is 85 years old has made his home in Steamboat Rock for many years.
