Manley Bakker, Lifelong Area Resident, Dead

Manley Bakker passed away shortly after 1 o'clock, Tuesday morning, June 5, 1979, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota due to cancer, having reached the age of 66 years, 3 months and 1 day. He had been taken there on Wednesday night May 30th for treatment.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 8, 1979, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church. Rev. Leslie Kuiper was officiating clergyman. The Messengers quartet, Richard Schafer, Lary Riebkes, Melvin Haupt and Arnold Eiten sang two numbers. They were accompanied by Mrs. LuRay Meyer. Miss Elizabeth Eekhoff was organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. Herman Koch and Mrs. Virgil Byl. Pallbearers were Henry Haupt, Claus Janssen, Al Blythe, Carl H. Nederhoff, Dwight Bakker and Jon Bakker. Interment was made in the First Christian Reformed Church Cemetery. The Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He was born Manley William Bakker on a farm in Shiloh Township, southwest of Wellsburg on March 4, 1913, the son of John M. and Martha (Eekhoff) Bakker, and attended the Pine Creek School. On September 6, 1942, he was united in marriage to Helen Powell at Oskaloosa, Iowa. Following their marriage they lived on a farm southwest of Wellsburg. In 1970, they moved to Wellsburg to make their home. He drove a school bus for the Wellsburg Community Schools for eight years.

Manley was baptized in the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg on May 25, 1913 and made profession of his faith in Jesus Christ on June 23, 1938. He was serving on the church consistory as an elder. He also was attending Men's Forum, Adult Sunday School, and Bible Study Group.

Preceding him in death were: his parents, a brother in infancy, a sister in infancy, 1 brother, Herman, 1 son, Paul Allen in infancy, and 1 grandson, Ronald Eugene Bakker in infancy.

Those left to mourn his passing are: his wife, Helen; 1 daughter, Carol Lee Bakker of Wellsburg; 1 son, Jack Eugene Bakker of Wellsburg; 1 grandson, Wayne Alan Bakker; 2 granddaughters, Diane Renee and Cheryl Kay Bakker; 3 brothers and 1 sister, Peter Bakker of Steamboat Rock; Edwin Bakker of Steamboat Rock; Lee Bakker of Wellsburg; Mrs. Karol (Genevieve) Powell of Oskaloosa and many other relatives and friends.
