John Reents, Longtime Area Farmer, Dies
Funeral services for John Reents, a longtime Wellsburg area farmer, were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Reformed Church west of Wellsburg, with burial in the church cemetery.
Rev. John Gorter officiated.
Soloist was Alfred Eiten, and Miss Elizabeth Eekhoff was organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. Roy deNeui and Mrs. Tielko Bunger.
Six grandsons of the deceased were casket bearers. They were Richard, David, Joe D. and Mike Reents and Bruce and Kent Berghuis.
Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
John Reents passed away Friday afternoon, July 29, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center due to congestive heart failure. He reached the age of 86 years, 7 months and 4 days. He had been confined to the hospital since June 29th.
He was born in Clay County, Iowa, on December 25, 1896, the son of Berend and Hauke (Johnson) Reents. When he was 6 years old, the family moved to a farm near Clara City, Minnesota. He received his education in the country school in the area.
On March 17, 1922, he was married to Bessie Aeikens and this union was blessed with one son, Bernard Reents. In June 1928 she passed away.
On February 24, 1932, he was married to Tillie Bunger of Wellsburg, and this union was blessed with one daughter, Harriet. After their marriage they moved on a farm southwest of Wellsburg and lived there until January of 1960, at which time they moved to the town of Wellsburg. His wife passed away on October 13, 1976.
John was a long-time member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg and served on the church consistory for a number of years.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his first wife, Bessie; his second wife, Tillie; an infant daughter; two brothers who were both named Lubert; one sister, Mrs. Mattie Schneck and a stillborn brother.
Survivors include one son, Bernard Reents of Wellsburg; one daughter, Harriet, Mrs. Marlen Berghuis of Wellsburg; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Geerdes of Milford, Iowa and Mrs. Trena Johnson of Fairmont, Minnesota, and numerous nieces and nephews.
