Family Mourns Death Of Mrs. Gratus Geerdes

Mrs. Tarana Geerdes passed away Monday morning, June 7 at her home in Wellsburg following a lingering illness. She reached the age of 68 years, 10 months and 4 days.

Funeral services for Mrs. Tarana Geerdes were held on Wednesday, June 9, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church west of Wellsburg.

Officiating was Rev. John Gorter.

Two selections were sung by the Messengers, Richard Schafer, Lary Riebkes, Melvin Haupt and Arnold Eiten, accompanied by Mrs. LuRay Meyer. Mrs. Jack Bakker was organist.

Flower attendants were Mrs. Roy deNeui and Mrs. Carl Reiter.

Pall bearers were Mark Geerdes, Jeff Huisman, Sidney Penning, Glen Bakker, Merle Bakker and Larry Stubbe.

Interment was held in the First Christian Reformed Church cemetery.

Arrangements were in charge of Doyen Funeral Home.

She was born on a farm in Butler county, east of Ackley, on August 3, 1913, the daughter of Henry and Nancy (Janssen) Stubbe.

She received her education in the Austinville Grade School and attended high school in Ackley. She attended a short course at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls before starting a teaching career at various country schools.

On September 10, 1938, she was married to Gratus J. Geerdes at the West Friesland Presbyterian Church Parsonage by Rev. Johnson. Following their marriage they made their home on a farm west of Wellsburg. In the fall of 1974 they retired from the farm and moved to Wellsburg to make their home.

Tarana was baptized in the Ackley Christian Reformed Church and became a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg by confession of faith on August 26, 1940. She was an active member of the Ladies Guild, Service Group and Timothy Sisters.

Preceding her in death were her parents, a son, Eugene Lynn on March 23, 1950; one brother, LuVerne Stubbe and one sister, (Elizabeth) Mrs. Albert Penning.

Those left to mourn her passing are her husband, Gratus J. Geerdes; two daughters and two sons, James Geerdes of Mason City, (Norma) Mrs. Dennis L. Huisman of Wellsburg, Robert Geerdes of Wellsburg, (Marcia) Mrs. Gary Beving of Wellsburg; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Miss Cora Stubbe of Ackley; two brothers, Ted Stubbe of Aplington and Chris Stubbe of Aplington, and many other relatives and friends.
