John Heikens, 94, Lifelong Resident, Dead

John J. Heikens passed away Friday afternoon, January 22, 1982, at the Beverly Manor Convalescent Center in Grundy Center due to complications of advanced age. He reached the age of 92 years, nine months and 23 days.

Funeral services for John J. Heikens were held on Tuesday, January 26, 1982 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church. Rev. John Gorter was officiating pastor. Music was furnished by a men's quartet, Richard Schafer, Lary Riebkes, Melvin Haupt, and Arnold Eiten. Accompanist was Mrs. LuRay Meyer. Miss Elizabeth Eekhoff was organist. Casket bearers were Jonas Geerdes, Gordon Heetland, James Geerdes, Julius H. Heikens, Evert Heikens, and Melvin Nederhoff. Burial was in the First Christian Reformed Church cemetery. Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He was born on a farm in Shiloh township, northwest of Wellsburg on March 29, 1887, the son of Julius and Henrietta (Meyer) Heikens, and attended the rural school in the area. On February 28, 1929, he was married to Gertie Geerdes. Following their marriage they made their home on a farm in Hardin County for one year. In 1930 they moved to their farm west of Wellsburg. In 1955 they retired and moved to Wellsburg to make their home. Mrs. Heikens passed away on February 22, 1977. John had been a resident of the Beverly Manor Convalescent Center since February 1977.

Mr. Heikens was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg having made confession of faith, together with his wife, on December 25, 1931.

Preceding him in death were: his parents, his wife, two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Wilts and Mrs. Anka Noordman, also four brothers, Julius, Ebbo, Henry and Harry Heikens; one infant sister and two infant brothers.

Survivors include: two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Wulf of the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center; Mrs. Anna Nederhoff of Ackley; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Dena Heikens of Wellsburg, and many nieces and nephews.
