Services Held Tuesday For Gerry Bakker

Mrs. Meint (Gerry) Bakker of Wellsburg passed away at 1:12 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.

Funeral services were held at the First Christian Reformed Church, rural Wellsburg, on Tuesday, February 17, at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Thomas J. Vos officiated.

Jan Knutson sang "Nearer My God To Thee," and Brian Knutson sang "How Great Thou Art." They were accompanied by Mrs. Charles Diehl. Mrs. Jack Bakker played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

The casket bearers were Melvin Nederhoff, Harvey Eiten, Alfred Eiten, Lee Bakker, Kenneth Luhring and George Sietsema.

Ushers were Roy Luiken and Edward Nederhoff. Mrs. Minnie Schmidt and Mrs. Lucille Nederhoff were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Interment was in the First Christian Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Wellsburg.

Relatives and friends were invited to return to the church following the committal services for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshments.

Mrs. Bakker was born on August 28, 1930, on a farm near Hubbard, the daughter of William and Marie Sharpshaire Hornung. She attained the age of 56 years, five months and 16 days.

Her family moved to Iowa Falls on a farm near Siloam Springs and she graduated from the Iowa Falls high school in 1948, and later attended Ellsworth Junior College and received her teaching certificate in 1950.

On August 14, 1950, she was united in marriage to Meint J. Bakker. They started their married life in Aplington, where she taught elementary school for two years. In 1952, they moved to Wellsburg, where she taught in the grade school for many years and also as a substitute teacher. She also was a full-time bookkeeper for the family business.

She was an active member of the First Christian Reformed Church for 37 years.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Hornung.

She is survived by her husband, Meint J. Bakker, of Wellsburg; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jane Bakker of Chicago, IL and Jan and Brian Knutson of Tallahassee, FL; her mother, Mrs. Marie Hornung, Iowa Falls; three sisters, Mrs. Jim (Margaret) Worthen, Webster City; Mrs. Joe (Lila) Knosby and Mrs. Bob (Wilma) Prock, both of Des Moines; and by one brother, Richard Hornung of Maple Grove, MN.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
