Rites Held For Martha Kurtzleben

Martha Deters Geerdes Kurtzleben, 82, of Wellsburg, formerly of Britt, died Wednesday, March 29, at the Ackley Presbyterian Home of natural causes.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 31, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg with burial in the church cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established.

Martha was born on May 29, 1912, in Grundy county the daughter of Hemmo and Greitje Van Deest Deters. She attended the Flowing Well School, German No. 8 in rural Grundy County.

On January 6, 1938, she was united in marriage to Jacob A. Geerdes at the First Christian Reformed Church parsonage in Wellsburg by Louise Vouskil. They lived on a farm in rural Grundy county until moving to Wellsburg in March of 1959. Jacob passed away June 2, 1971.

On November 30, 1974, she was united in marriage to Harm Kurtzleben in Nashua. They made their home in Britt. Harm passed away on September 13, 1989, and she moved back to Wellsburg for a short time before going to the Ackley Presbyterian Home on June 22, 1990.

Martha was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg and was a previous member of the Queen Esther Circle and worked at the Wellsburg School Cafeteria for 12 years.

Martha was preceded in death by her husbands, Jacob Geerdes and Harm Kurtzleben; her parents; 6 brothers, Adolph, Hemmo, Tammo, William, and 2 in infancy; and 3 sisters, Bertha Deters and 2 in infancy.

She is survived by 1 daughter, Imogene Boomgarden and her husband Lee of Wellsburg; 2 sons, Donald Geerdes and his wife Connie of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dale Geerdes and his wife Becky of Cedar Falls; 4 grandsons, Gary Boomgarden and wife Kathy of Cedar Falls, Brian Boomgarden of Wellsburg, Nathan and Nicolaus Geerdes of Cedar Falls; 1 great-grandson, Trenton Boomgarden of Cedar Falls; 1 sister, Mrs. Peter (Gepka) Nederhoff of Wellsburg; and several friends and relatives.

Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg, was in charge of the arrangements.
