George Woodbury Thorndike
George Woodbury Thorndike, eldest son of Geo. W. and Abigail Sayles Thorndike was born December 9th, 1848, in Boston, Massachusetts.
He came with his parents to Henry county, Illinois, going from there to Cass county, Nebraska, in 1865.
In 1869 they came from Cass county, Nebraska, to Grundy county, Iowa, living here from that time until his death.
On November 19th, 1873, he was married to Allie Mason of this county, who survives him. There are also surviving him four sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Elizabeth Childs, Lincoln, Nebraska; Mrs. Emma Urwin, Creighton, Nebraska; Mrs. Dr. Eugene A. Crouse, Grundy Center, Iowa; Mrs. Alice Morrow, Lincoln, Nebraska; Edgar Thorndike, Lingle, Wyoming; A. E. Thorndike, Cambridge, Nebraska.
Mr. Thorndike was baptized into the fellowship of the First Baptist church of this city, being treasurer of the church as also on its board of trustees for a number of years.
During the building of the edifice destroyed by fire he was a member and treasurer of the building committee.
For a number of years Mr. Thorndike was a member of the board of trustees of Washington township. He was also an active and consistent member of the Knights of Pythias.
Mr. Thorndike passed away on the morning of Friday, September 26th, 1919.
