Rites Held For Etta DeVries

Mrs. Etta DeVries of Grundy Center passed away at 11:39 a.m. Friday, December 6, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.

Funeral services were held at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center on Monday, December 9, at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Calvin W. Vanderwerf officiated.

Musical interludes of "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art" were rendered by Mrs. Raymond Appel, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

Ushers were Edward Flater and Fred Terfehn. Mrs. Vernon Klosterboer was in charge of the floral arrangements.

The committal services were held immediately following the funeral service. Relatives and friends were invited to remain at the church following the services for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshments.

Interment was in Rose Hill-Fairview Cemetery in Grundy Center.

Mrs. DeVries was born August 7, 1906, on a farm near Steamboat Rock in Hardin county, the daughter of George and Gertie Eiten Geersema. She grew up near Steamboat Rock and attended school there. She attained the age of 79 years, three months and 29 days.

On September 7, 1938, she was united in marriage to Fred DeVries at Wellsburg. After their marriage, they farmed for three years near Steamboat Rock and then farmed near Ackley, Eldora, and for 16 years near Stout.

On December 15, 1959, they moved and made their home in Grundy Center. She worked in the Dietary Department of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital for eight years and at Beverly Manor for four years.

She was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock and when they lived near Stout, she was a member of the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church. After moving to Grundy Center she joined the Bethany Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, Fred, passed away on April 22, 1978.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home of Grundy Center was in charge of the arrangements.
