Grundy Rites For Vera Kern

Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian church in Grundy Center, Friday afternoon November 25 at 1:30 for Mrs. Vera Kern, 85, who died Tuesday morning, November 22, 1977 at the Roberts Care Center in Waterloo.

Rev. Douglas Kelly officiated. Merle Mamminga sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "In The Garden". He was accompanied by Mrs. Raymond Appel, who also played selected prelude and postlude selections. Pall bearers were James Cech, Elwood Cone, George Peppler, Joe Dunham, Paul Buchan and Harry Cooley. Ushers were George Hauser and Floyd Rouse. Mrs. Marvin DeVries and Mrs. Charles Rhoads, Jr. were floral attendants. Dale Bee furnished a car for the family use. Friends and relatives returned to the church following the committal service in Fairview cemetery, Grundy Center. Refreshments were served by the ladies of the church. A memorial fund has been established.

Mrs. Kern was born May 17, 1892 near Grundy Center, Iowa the daughter of Alex and Elizabeth Longnecker Buchan. On June 19, 1912, she was married to Archie Kern at Grundy Center. They farmed near Grundy Center until 1951 when they moved into Grundy Center to make their home. Mr. Kern died August 20, 1953. She continued to make her home in Grundy Center until March 9, 1968 when she entered a nursing home at Cedar Falls, and later in Waterloo.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Mavis) Gilbert of Waterloo, and Mrs. Jerry (Joyce) Sodergren of Cedar Falls, two brothers, William Buchan of Charles City and John Buchan of Waterloo, one sister, Mrs. Emma Loeb of Schuylkill Haven, Pa. and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Oscar, one daughter, Gladys, four brothers and four sisters.

Arrangements were in charge of the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home.
