Cancer Association Organizer Dies At County Hospital

Mrs. William Koobs, 66, of rural Grundy Center, one of the organizers of the Grundy County Cancer Society 15 years ago, died at 9:30 p.m. Monday at Grundy County Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for 17 days.

Death was due to cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Grundy Center, with Rev. J. C. Ford officiating. Burial will be in the Grundy Center cemetery.

Mrs. Koobs, the former Clarice Hasbrouck, was born September 4, 1902 at Grundy Center, the daughter of Ernest and Emma Hasbrouck.

She was graduated from Grundy Center high school in 1919, and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Cedar Rapids, in 1922.

On October 25, 1923, she was united in marriage at Marshalltown to William Koobs. The couple has farmed in Lincoln township, Grundy county, since 1929.

In addition to the cancer society, Mrs. Koobs also was instrumental in found both the Grundy County Health Association and Grundy County Nurses Association.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband and eight children: Claire, Grundy Center; Pattie, Mrs. Lester Wood, Arlington, Va.; Margaret, Mrs. Phil Strehle, Clinton; Alice, Mrs. Leonard Grimsley, Harlan; Maxine, Mrs. Harvey Sietsema, Grundy Center; Roger, Wayzata, Minn.; Jack, Raleigh, N.C.; and Gerald, Grundy Center.

Also surviving are 22 grandchildren: two sisters, Beulah Hasbrouck of Grundy Center, and Lavine Koobs of Waterloo; and one brother, Marlyn Hasbrouck, New Hartford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two grandchildren.

The casket will be taken to the church Thursday noon from the Engelkes Funeral Home.
