L. M. Hawn Rites Held Saturday

Funeral services for L. M. Hawn, who died Wednesday evening, Apr. 7, were held at Coffman & Ferree funeral home, Grundy Center, Saturday afternoon. Burial was in the family lot in the Grundy Center cemetery. Rev. Merton Green, local Methodist pastor, conducted the services.

Mr. Hawn suffered a stroke of paralysis about a year ago, from which he only partially recovered. For the past month he had been failing noticeably and succumbed to a more severe stroke at this time.

He was born at Clayton, New York, August 16, 1869. At an early age he came with his family to Marble Rock, Iowa. On October 9, 1889, he was united in marriage to Etta J. Leigh, and they lived on a farm in Floyd county for a number of years. Then they moved to Kossuth county, coming from there in 1896 to live 1 1/2 miles east of Grundy Center. In 1908 they moved to Grundy Center.

Served as County Auditor
Mr. Hawn was active in politics and served three terms as auditor of Grundy county. He was elected in 1918 and served until Jan. 1, 1925. Under Gov. Hammill's appointed he served as Supervisor at Fort Madison. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge for many years, having been Chancellor Commander, Keeper of Records and Seals, and District Deputy. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Preceding him in death were his wife and one son, Glenn L., in the spring of 1908. At that time his sister-in-law, Ida B. Leigh, came from Rockford to assist in the home and has constantly been with the family.

The survivors are two sons, Lyle C. of Grundy Center and Byron C. of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Mrs. Glenn R. Bishop of Ames and Byron L. and Shirley Sue Hawn of Waterloo; also one sister, Mrs. J. B. Losee of Marble Rock.

Relatives from a distance at the funeral service were Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Leigh, Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Forrest Ackley and Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Morisky, Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. Verne Losee and Mrs. Dale Winfield of Marble Rock; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Maxson and Mr. and Mrs. Verne Leigh of Charles City; Robert Leigh, Iowa City; Mr. and Mrs. Ben H. Upton, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn R. Bishop, Ames.
