Funeral Services Saturday For August Hartke

Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Engelkes funeral home in Grundy Center for August Hartke, who died last Thursday at the age of 79 years. Rev. F. J. Langenberg officiated. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery. He had been in ill health for the past three years and critically ill the past six weeks.

August Hartke was born in Germany August 21, 1868. At the age of 30 years he came to America, settling at Bensonville, Ill. Two years later he moved to Ackley. October 10, 1901, he was married to Grace Barkhoff of Lincoln Center. They came to Grundy Center about 45 years ago where Mr. Hartke worked in the brick yards as a mason for a number of years, later working for W. D. Wilson at the stockyards and later took up the butcher trade, working for R. E. and Clarence Gottsch. He remained active as a butcher until ill health overtook him.

He is survived by nine children: Heinie, William, Melvin, John and Louis of Grundy Center, Fred Hartke of Cedar Falls; Mrs. Edwin Lowder, New Bedford, Ill., and Enno and Christine at Glenwood. Marie died in 1939. There are 10 grandchildren.

Relatives from away attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George Lupkes of Wheaton, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mamminga of Oregon, Ill., Mrs. Christine Beck of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Annie Barkhoff and children of Dike, Mr. and Mrs. Enno Stork of Lincoln. Friends from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Thompson and children of New Bedford, Ill., and Mrs. O. L. Lowder of Waterloo.
