Mrs. John Souers Dies Following Short Illness

Mrs. John Souers died at St. Francis hospital, Waterloo, at 5:30 Sunday evening, following a severe stroke the evening before. She had not been feeling well for a number of weeks. Ten days ago she was taken to the hospital at Iowa City for an examination and for a short time thereafter she seemed to feel better. She went from Iowa City to Waterloo on Monday to visit at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Byron Hawn. She became very ill there and was sent to St. Francis hospital.

Funeral services were held at the Stephen funeral home in Grundy Center Wednesday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Oliver Stevenson, pastor of First Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery.

Resided in Grundy County 52 Years
Mrs. Souers resided in Grundy county continuously during the past 52 years. The past 40 years her home was in Grundy Center where she had a wide acquaintance and where the announcement of her death was received with deep regret.

Native of Indiana
Mrs. Souers' maiden name was Magdaline Harders. She was born at Valparaiso, Indiana, on Nov. 25, 1867. She was one of four children.

After the death of her father she accompanied her mother and two brothers to a farm near Arcadia, Iowa.

Mr. and Mrs. John Souers were married in Dakota City, Iowa, in January 1888 and shortly thereafter moved to their farm three miles southeast of Grundy Center where they remained until they moved to town 12 years later.

Five children were born to the union. One died in infancy. Surviving are the husband; one son, John Jr., Jefferson, Iowa; three daughters: Mrs. Loana Allison, Sioux City, Mrs. Esther Hawn, Waterloo, Mrs. Blanche Greene, Sioux City. There are seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Souers was baptized in the Lutheran Church and attended the Presbyterian church in Grundy Center.

Relatives here for the funeral service were Mr. and Mrs. Byron Hawn, Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Allison and daughter and son, Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Greene and daughter, Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. John Souers, Jr. and son and daughter of Denison; Eldon Souers and Lawrence Souers, Fargo, No. Dak.; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Swiger of Calmus, Iowa.
