Deaner K. Lawless, Sr., 82 of Gaithersburg, MD, formerly of Grundy Center, died Friday, Oct. 25 at the Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg. Following funeral services in Maryland, graveside services were held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 10:30 a.m. Full military honors were provided by Grundy Center American Legion Post #349 and AMVETS 17.
Deaner was born June 12, 1920 in Grundy Center, the son of Delbert and Hazel Looker Lawless. After attending local high school and college in Iowa, he enlisted in the US Navy where he spent 20 years in research of tropical medicine, specializing in Malaria. He furthered his research at NIH for the next ten years after retiring from the Navy. Deaner was united in marriage to Margaret C. Collins. From 1970 until just recently, he pursued his love of archaeology where much of his collection resides with the State of Maryland.
Surviving are his wife; sons Deaner Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jim of Gaithersburg; daughters Karen Lawless of Gaithersburg, Jeanne Snyder of Baltimore, MD, and Linda Dinnay of Tennessee; and eight grandchildren.
