Harm J. Aswegan Obituary

Harm J. Aswegan was born at Midlum, Eastfriesland, Germany, Oct. 18, 1866. There he grew to young manhood. March 3, 1886, when 20 years old, he came to this country, to Lincoln Center, Grundy county, Iowa. He worked as a farm hand. On Jan. 11, 1889, he was united in marriage with Roberta Marks. This union was blessed with 14 children. They farmed three miles southwest of here until they moved on a farm in Franklin county near Dows, where they lived for some ten years and then came back to Grundy county and farmed four miles southwest of Stout, after which they moved on a farm northeast of Stout, until the deceased retired from farming in 1938, when he moved to Stout.

Last February it was deemed advisable to take him away. He was taken to his son Luke and wife, where he was cared for, for some three months, and after that he spent a few weeks at his daughter's home at Gladbrook and a few weeks he spent at his son's George's place.

It was then thought advisable to take him to the Christie convalescent home in Cedar Falls. Here he spent the last two months of his life's journey. He passed away suddenly. Since he had had heart trouble the last few years, a heart attack resulted in his demise.

Those that preceded him in death are: the 18 year old son David, who died in 1918; Tillie, Mrs. Geo. Rewerts, in 1925; his wife in 1932 and his son Robert in 1942.

He is survived by 11 children, 8 sons and 3 daughters, whose names are: Henry, Dinsdale; John, Dike; Harm, Mexico, Mo.; Fred, Grundy Center; George and Luke, Dike; Dena, Ackley; Anna, Mrs. Kuehl, Gladbrook; Lucy, Mrs. Eberhart Mudderman, Ackley; Joe, Dike; William, Wellsburg; 36 grandchildren; 1 sister, Mrs. D. H. Aswegan, Fern; 1 brother, Luke, of Fern.

Mr. Aswegan reached an age of 82 years, 9 months, 23 days. Both he and his wife were members of the Stout church, which they joined in 1928.

Interment was in the family lot of the Stout cemetery.
