Louisa L. Downs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Downs, was born near Downsville, Md., on August 10, 1840, and died at her home in Beaman, on Monday morning, Feb. 12, 1923, aged 82 years, 6 months and 2 days. On September 21, 1859, in Washington county, Md., she was united in marriage to Vinton Artz. Two children were born to them, both of whom died in infancy. Following marriage they resided in Maryland until 1870, when they came to Iowa and engaged in farming. In 1901 they retired from the farm and moved to Beaman. At this place on April 29, 1917, the husband died. Since then she has been cared for by her husband's nephew, M. A. Artz. She is the last of a family of ten children. Her nearest surviving relatives are nephews and nieces. She and her husband were both members of the Brethren church in Maryland, to which they remained faithful to the end of their lives. Funeral services were held from the home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. J. J. Snyder, pastor of the M.E. church officiating, and interment was made in the Oakland cemetery.
