Harriet Ross Carpenter, second daughter of Elijah and Fanny Carpenter, was born in Swanzey, N.H., May 4, 1819. She was married to Nathan Watkins of Walpole, N.H., Aug. 29, 1837, and removed to Hinsdale, N.H., where she resided seven years and then returned to Swanzey. Mr. Watkins was one of the goldseekers of '49, and died in California in 1850. In 1863 she removed to Wisconsin, and in 1875 to Grundy county, Iowa, where she resided with her only son, Mr. Wm. E. Watkins, to the time of her death Friday, Feb. 22, 1901. She was 81 years, 9 months and 18 days old. Her daughter, Mrs. E. Madora Phelps, and son, who reside in Spring Prairie, Wis., were present at the funeral services. Mrs. Watkins is survived by two sisters and a brother. Services were held last Sabbath at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. W. H. Jordan, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Grundy center. The music was furnished by the members of the Palermo Sunday school. Interment was in the Clark cemetery.
