Joe Dekker, 63, Died Four Days After Sister

Joseph "Joe" A. Dekker, 63, died at the Allen Memorial hospital in Waterloo Thursday, April 14 at 7:20 p.m. after suffering a heart attack at his home in Grundy Center.

Rosary was recited Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home. The funeral mass was conducted Monday morning, April 18, 1977, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Grundy Center with Rev. Monsignor Maurice A. Mullan officiating.

Pallbearers were Glenn Vinton, Darrel Loveless, Don Loveless, Gary Long, Junior Hippen and Craig Vinton. Don Coleman and Joseph W. Hulne were ushers. Floral attendants were Mrs. Ronald Voss and Miss Erma Henze. Virgil Abels provided a car for the family. Burial was in the Sacred Heart cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

He was born October 10, 1913 on a farm west of Grundy Center, the son of William A. and Marie Slyfer Dekker. On January 28, 1939 he was united in marriage to Gladys Vinton at the Sacred Heart church in LaPorte City. They have spent all of their married life in Grundy Center. Following their marriage he operated a gas station and was in the trucking business. On September 1, 1949 he became light plant operator at the Grundy Center municipal Light and Power Company. He continued with this work until April 4, 1976, when, because of health reasons, he retired.

Joe was a member of the Sacred Heart church, the Holy Name Men's Society and the Forresters.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys, one daughter, Mrs. Jon (Janet) Edler of rural Melbourne, one brother, Albert Dekker of Grundy Center, three sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Johanna) Schwarck of Eldora, Mrs. Wallace (Margaret) Norman of rural Grundy Center, Mrs. Orville (Gezenna) Loveless of LaPorte City and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Freda Bottema, who died four days previously.
