Came To Grundy Center 82 Years Ago
Anna Wegstein came to Grundy Center with her parents 82 years ago. The parents were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wegstein. When the family came here they put up a two-story frame building on Main street where the Goodyear store is now located. They started with a restaurant, which they later changed to a hotel. It became a popular stopping place, especially for farmers, where home cooked food was served for 25 cents for a full sized meal. A dollar a day paid for a room and three meals a day at this hotel. The family came here a year ahead of the railroad. The lumber for their hotel was hauled here from Traer.

Born in New Jersey During Civil War
Anna Wegstein was born in New Jersey, Aug. 3, 1864. That was a year before the end of the Civil War. The family consisted of father and mother, one brother, three half-brothers and one sister. Anna is the last of the family. Only known surviving relatives are a nephew, Rudolf Figler from Fort Dodge and a niece, Mrs. Arthur Grummert of Fairbury, Neb.
