Last Rites Monday For Rev. Connell
Funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Grundy Center Monday morning at 11 o'clock for Father John P. Connell who passed away at the St. Francis hospital in Waterloo on July 29.
Pallbearers were Richard Connell, Russell Connell, J. Francis Connell, Michael Murphy, Joseph Hulne and Thomas Murphy. Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Grundy Center, Iowa.
He had spent the past 15 years at Tampa, Fla. His last pastorate was at Riceville.
He was born on June 14, 1893 in Grundy County, Iowa, the son of Jeremiah and Bridget Cullinan Connell. He attended the Grundy Center schools and graduated from Loras college in Dubuque. He received his seminary education from the Grand Seminary in Quebec, Canada and was ordained there in 1922. Father Connell offered his first mass at the Sacred Heart Church in Grundy Center on June 14, 1922.
Father Connell had served at various parishes in this area including Sacred Heart in Waterloo and Eldora.
He is survived by three sisters, Sister Mary Carmelita of Ottumwa, Mrs. Mae Murphy of Waterloo and Miss Margaret Connell of Grundy Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.
The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus kept vigil as guards during Sunday night and at the funeral mass which was offered by the Most Reverend James J. Byrne, Archbishop of Dubuque. Co-celebrants were Rev. Msgr. Ernest Ament, Very Rev. William Mullen, Very Rev. William B. Collins. The Rev. Justin Kress preached the homily. Many priests from the Archdiocese attended the services.
Acolytes were Jeffrey Hulne and Mikie Meaney.
The Oppold Funeral Home of Waterloo and the Ferree-Oltmann Funeral Home in Grundy Center were in charge of arrangements.
