Verna Catherine Wells, age 106, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, formerly of Parkersburg, Iowa was born the daughter of Nick and Mary (Hauer) Perry on March 21, 1905, in St. Lucas, Iowa. Verna attended a parochial school in St. Lucas.

On February 12, 1923, Verna was united in marriage with Glenn O. Wells in New Hampton, Iowa. After their marriage the couple moved to Omaha, Nebraska until moving to Buck Grove, Iowa in 1932, where they opened a country store. In 1941, they moved to Grundy Center, where Verna did sewing and provided board for teachers for many years, as well as being actively involved in her church, Sacred Heart. On February 11, 1971, after nearly 48 years of marriage, Glenn passed away. In 1978 Verna moved to Parkersburg.

Verna was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church where she was active in Catholic Order of Foresters, Altar Committee, Rosary Society, and served on the parish council. Verna often led the rosary and was a very devout person, spending much time in daily prayer either in her home or at the church.

In her spare time Verna loved to cook and bake, often preparing delicious meals for relatives and friends. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, weekly card games with friends and monthly card parties at church. Verna knitted and crocheted many beautiful tablecloths, bedspreads, doilies, and baby blankets, which were lovingly given away as gifts.

Verna had an indomitable courage and zest for life, despite knee replacements, surviving breast cancer, bone fractures, and pancreatitis. Verna was a wonderful inspiration and example for all of those who knew and loved her.

On Monday, June 20, 2011, Verna passed away at the Western Home in Cedar Falls of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn on February 11, 1971; her parents; five brothers, Ted, Al, Milton, Jack, and Eddie; one sister, Marie Peacock.

Verna is survived by her son, James (Sue) Wells of St. Marys, Georgia; two granddaughters, Stephanie Hart and Deborah Kemp; 4 great-grandchildren, Payton, Jordan, Michael and Connor; one sister, Maxine Olsen of North Carolina.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 24, 2011, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parkersburg. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Grundy Center.
