Death of Dr. W. P. Penfield

Former Conrad Physician Dies at Marshalltown

Dr. W. P. Penfield, 93, for forty years a practicing physician of Conrad, died at 10:20 Monday forenoon of complications and old age at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. L. Fields in Marshalltown. A year ago Mr. Penfield suffered a slight stroke of paralysis and Sept. 11, 1920 fell and suffered a fracture of the hip which left him helpless.

Dr. William P. Penfield was born at Camden, N.Y., June 7, 1828. He was united in marriage there with Miss Amelia J. Dawley, April 2, 1850. To this union three children were born, two of whom died in infancy. During the civil war Dr. Penfield served as assistant surgeon of the 156th infantry.

Dr. and Mrs. Penfield moved to Illinois in 1854 and in 1868 came to Iowa and settled at Conrad. Fifteen years ago Mrs. Penfield died at Conrad and three years ago Dr. Penfield went to Marshalltown to make his home with his daughter.

Besides the daughter, one grandson and two granddaughters survive, besides G. D. Spencer whom Dr. Penfield reared. Dr. Penfield had been a Mason since 1854.

The funeral was held at the Methodist church at Conrad at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Burial was in the Conrad cemetery.
