Mrs. John J. Arends Died October 4
Mrs. John J. Arends, who had resided all her life in Grundy county, died at her home in Stout at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, of a heart attack, aged 82 years, 5 months, 26 days.
Mrs. Kate Arends, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Goke Poppen, was born in Colfax township, Grundy county, Iowa, April 8, 1885. Following her marriage to John J. Arends on March 14, 1907, with the Rev. Dan Shaeffer performing the ceremony, the family farmed east of Fern and later north of Stout. In 1939 they retired and moved to Stout.
Her early religious instruction and training was received in the Pleasant Valley Reformed church, Holland, and she made confession of faith there on March 15, 1907. On April 3, 1927, she together with her husband had their communicant membership transferred to the Reformed Church of Stout.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents, 3 infant sons, 2 brothers, Adam Poppen and Rev. Otto Poppen, and two sisters, Mrs. Anjte Sonnenberg and Mrs. Lena Kessler.
She is survived by two sons, Joe J. Arends of New Hartford and Ernest Arends of Parkersburg; four daughters, Anna (Mrs. Richard Raske) of Dike; Martha Arends at home; Lena (Mrs. Henry Luchtenburg) of Allison; and Lillian (Mrs. Thomas Myers) of Stout; 12 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Many other relatives and friends mourn her passing.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 7, with a family service at 12:30 p.m. at the home, and at 1:00 p.m. at the Reformed Church of Stout with the Rev. John Hoekstra officiating, assisted by Rev. Geo. Poppen of St. Anne, Ill., a nephew of the deceased.
Mrs. John Hoekstra sang two numbers, "Going Down the Valley" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" with Mrs. Florence Dilger serving as organist and accompanist. The pastor's message was based on Isa. 63:9, "The Sympathy of God."
Casketbearers were Tom Dreesman, Elmer Muller, John B. Arends, C. B. Sonnenberg, Ray Thoren and Vernon Stahl.
Interment was at Pleasant Valley Reformed church cemetery, west of Fern.
