Rites Held For Hazel Lawless

Mrs. Delbert E. (Hazel) Lawless passed away at 1:55 a.m. Thursday, January 5, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.

Funeral services were held at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center on Saturday, January 7 at 10:30 a.m. Pastor David L. Nelson of the United Methodist Church of Grundy Center officiated.

Taped musical selections were played for the prelude and postlude.

The casket bearers were Rient Beenken, David L. Brown, Joe D. Ross, Naaman Haren, Leonard Ralston and Donald Palmer.

Mrs. Virginia Schultz and Mrs. Frances Sievert were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Mrs. Lawless was born on December 17, 1896 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of George and Harriett Looker. She attained the age of 87 years and 19 days. As a young girl, her family moved to Des Moines and later to Waterloo where she grew up.

On August 4, 1919, at Waterloo, she was united in marriage to Delbert E. Lawless. After their marriage they lived in Waterloo for three years. They lived in Waverly for 1 1/2 years, two years in Tripoli and three years in Nashua. In the early 1930s they moved to Grundy Center.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Grundy Center, American Legion Auxiliary and Past Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Delbert of Grundy Center; one son, Dean, of Barnville, MD; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home of Grundy Center was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
