Benjamin E. Groote, 90, of Ackley, formerly of Grundy Center, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley of natural causes. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Thursday, June 10, at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Kent Leydens and Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating.

Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Gideons or to the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Benjamin was born April 12, 1914, at home on his parent's farm in Colfax Township, rural Grundy County, son of Harm and Annie (Buskohl) Groote. He attended Colfax No. 6 rural country school. On February 2, 1939, Benjamin was united in marriage to Viola Stahl in Colfax Township, rural Grundy County. Benjamin was a farmer, living in Grundy County all of his life. He lived near Dike for two years, spending the majority of his time near Holland. Benjamin retired from farming in the summer of 1972, and they moved to Grundy Center. In August 2002, they moved to Genesis Place in Ackley. Benjamin attended Colfax Presbyterian Church, rural Holland and was currently a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Benjamin had served as an Elder for nine years, a Deacon for six years, and a Trustee for three years. Benjamin taught Sunday School for 50 years, Catechism for 55 years, was a youth sponsor for 40 years, a church camp counselor for six years and also helped with church work camps twice in Minnesota and South Dakota. Benjamin was also a 33 year Gideon member.

He is survived by his wife Viola Groote of Ackley; two daughters, Donna Haines and her husband The Rev. Dr. Dennis Haines of Clay Center, KS and Glenna Foutch of Hudson; one son, The Rev. Marvin Groote and his wife Adele of Sandy, UT; 10 grandchildren, Edwyn Groote and his wife Penni, Daniel Haines and his wife Mary, David Haines and his wife Therese, Sonya Henningsen, Darla Haines Mills and her husband Craig, Anthony Groote and his wife Tina, Keith Hall and his wife Melissa, Timothy Groote and his wife Brandi, Julie Bryant and Richard Foutch; 14 great-grandchildren, Danielle Haines, Kevin Bryant, Alex Henningsen, Ashley Haines, Kailey Bryant, Kennedi Groote, Justin Haines, Elizabeth Groote, Joale Groote, Maysan Groote, Samantha Bryant, Duncan Haines Mills, Gracie Hall, and Daleton Groote; one sister, Mary DeBerg and her husband Herman of Grundy Center; and one brother, Roy Groote and his wife Bernice of Dike.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; two brothers, Ernest Groote and Herman Groote; one daughter-in-law, Susan Groote; and one sister-in-law, Junice Groote.
