Bernard H. Beninga, 74, of Dike, died May 14 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral services were May 17 at the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church. Burial followed at the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Bernard was born December 8, 1929, in rural Grundy County, the son of Herman and Jennie (Schafer) Beninga. On August 15, 1949, he was united in marriage to Betty J. Webrand at the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church, rural Grundy Center. Bernard retired from farming in November of 1994. He still enjoyed going to the farm and helping his son. He loved to watch the crops grow and be harvested. He loved and knew people all over the country. Bernard was a lifelong member of the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent and as a member of the Consistory. He was also a catechism teacher. He served on the Dike School Board for 12 years and on the Grundy County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. He was a longtime trustee of Beaver Township.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Beninga of Dike, three sons, Les Beninga and his wife Annette of Parkersburg, Dean Beninga of Lincoln and Byron Beninga and his wife Patty of Parkersburg; two daughters, Eileen Beninga of Cedar Falls and her friend Diane Lansink and Jean and her husband Leon Meester of Holland; son-in-law, Jason Derrick; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Bergsma of Grand Rapids, MI and Doloris and her husband John Main of Denver, and a sister-in-law, Rosella Beninga of Grundy Center.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sonia Derrick on May 14, 2001; and a brother, Harlan Beninga on May 12, 2003.
