Matilda Marie Spieker, 79, of Coralville, formerly of Wellsburg, died April 13 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services were April 16 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, rural Wellsburg. Burial followed in the church cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

Matilda was born October 21, 1923, the daughter of Edd and Tillie (Boelman) Finger. She attended Aplington High School. She continued her education at Iowa State Teacher's College. On July 7, 1943 Matilda was united in marriage to Allen W. Spieker, while he was serving in the United States Army. Matilda taught in a one-room country schoolhouse and wrote her husband every day for three years. Once he returned from World War II, Matilda assumed the many roles of farm wife and mother.

She is survived by three daughters, one son, Jay Spieker of Wellsburg; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother; one sister-in-law; and one brother-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; an infant granddaughter; one brother; and two sisters.
