Jerry Spieker Died On Sunday

Jerry Spieker, a lifelong resident of Grundy county, died at his home in Wellsburg Sunday following a short illness from cancer. He was 67 years old last December.

Family Were Early Residents Of Grundy County
Mr. Spieker's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Spieker Sr., were among the early residents of north Grundy. Jerry was born Dec. 21, 1885, and grew up on a farm in German township, and he attended school there. January 3, 1908, he and Ella Lindaman were married by Rev. Meinster at Ackley. The first year of their married life they lived in Wellsburg during which time he was employed in a local grain elevator. The next year he and his wife moved to the German township farm where they resided until they moved to Wellsburg in 1946.

Served 3 Terms as County Supervisor
Jerry Spieker served three terms, or nine years, as a member of the county board of supervisors from the German-Pleasant Valley district. He retired at the conclusion of his third term. After coming to Wellsburg he served four years as a member of the Wellsburg town council. He was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical Reformed church in German township, and for many years served as a deacon and treasurer.

He took an active interest in politics during much of his lifetime and in the affairs of the town after he moved to Wellsburg.

Surviving are the wife, two daughters and one son. The daughters are Lydia, who is at home, Mrs. Luverne Benning from Geneva. The son Allen and his family live on the home farm in German township. There are 5 surviving grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Menno Kuper, Ackley, and Mrs. Matie Frerichs, Gladbrook. Preceding him in death were a daughter, Annie, who died in 1929; his parents; four sisters; three brothers, and one grandchild.

Funeral Services Wednesday
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, at the home in Wellsburg and later at St. Peter's church in German township. The services were conducted by the resident pastor, Rev. C. Jankowsky. Burial was in the cemetery adjoining the church.
