Rev. Edward Engelkes Aged Pastor Passed Away Last Sunday

Rev. Frederick William Engelkes, age 81, passed away at his home near Ackley Sunday following a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock at the home and at 1:30 at the Eastfriesland Presbyterian church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. William J. Lindaman; one sister, Mrs. Emil Funk, one brother, Fred Engelkes, Watertown, Wisconsin; and five grandchildren.

He was born Feb. 9, 1868, in Shields, Wisconsin, the son of August and Augusta Engelkes, who with two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. He attended Mamre, Moravian S.S. and church and was confirmed Mar. 23, 1883. He also attended normal school at Dixon, Ill., and Dubuque seminary from which he graduated in April 1899. In May 1889 he was married to Pauline Trachte, of Watertown, Wis., and was ordained to the ministry June 20, 1899 at Lexington, Neb., Kearney Presbyterian. He was a missionary pastor prior to his ordination.

Rev. Engelkes served at Buffalo Grove church near Lexington, Neb. for two years, Bethlehem church near Waukon, Ia. for five years and the Eastfriesland church near Ackley for 32 years. On June 9, 1926 the degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon him by Dubuque university. In 1938 he resigned his pastorate and built a home near his only daughter and family.
