Jimmy Dale Martin Killed Under Truck at Cleves

The little community of Cleves was stuck by tragedy Thursday morning when little Jimmy Dale Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Martin, was killed when he was run over by a semi-truck.

Jimmy who was three years old in July had apparently walked or crawled under the truck, which had halted at the intersection between the Cleves Mercantile Company, which is his parents' store, and the Cleves Bank. The truck driver, Leonard Borel, 34, operating a Co-op truck out of Des Moines, drove off unaware that anything had happened. He was located later but was absolved of blame in the accident, according to deputy sheriff Gene Setchell. Several people were nearby and no one saw the child under the vehicle. Ward Aikes, who was standing about 20 feet from the spot, found Jimmy's body almost immediately after the truck had driven away, at about 9:15.

Mrs. Martin was working in the store at the time and Mr. Martin was working at the Ackley Creamery.

Dr. John Sears of Alden, the Hardin county medical examiner, ruled the death was accidental and no inquest was necessary.

Jimmy's death is mourned by his parents, two sisters, Connie, 11 and Karen, 9, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Titus Jutting, and relatives and friends in the entire area.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Brandt Funeral Home.
