Engelke Abbas

Many Years a Resident of Ackley and Community

Engelke A. Abbas was born April 16, 1858, at Wymeer, Eastfriesland, Germany. He came to America in 1880. They lived on farms southeast and south of Ackley, but always within the vicinity of Ackley, until 1920, in which year they removed to town. Of the ten children born to them, three are not living: one son died in infancy; one son, Hemmo, died in 1918 at the age of 32 years; one daughter, Mrs. J. Koppedrayer, passed away in 1937, when she was 55 years of age.

Mr. Abbas passed away on Friday, Feb. 4, having lived to be 79 years, 9 months, and 14 days old.

He is survived by his widow; by a son, John of Madrid, Iowa; six daughters, Mrs. H. VanHeiden, Sheffield; Mrs. J. E. Cook, Grand Meadow, Minn.; Mrs. J. H. Johnson, Brownsdale, Minn.; Mrs. A. Bonk, Iowa Falls; Mrs. J. Hanig, Hampton; Mrs. E. H. Olson, Ackley. Two brothers, Rembd and Abel, both of Ackley; one sister, Mrs. Heit Huisenga, Parkersburg; 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the home, Rev. E. Seybold in charge. Interment was in Westfriesland cemetery, east of Ackley.
