Death Came to Him at His Home Here Friday Evening

The death of Eppe Arends occurred at his home in Ackley last Friday evening after an illness of only four days.

Mr. Arends, until coming to Ackley several years ago, was engaged in farming east of Ackley; coming to the community in the 80's. During the later years he had been troubled with rheumatism that affected him seriously but at most times he was able to be out and around, doing his accustomed chores and other duties about the home. The past several years that he has been a resident of Ackley, he and his daughter, Anna, were alone; Mrs. Arends having died--years ago.

He was born in 1857. Funeral services were held at his late home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Krafft, pastor of First Evangelical church.

Mr. Eppe F. Arends was born November 19, 1857 in East Friesland, Germany, where he lived till his 23rd year. During the period of extended immigration he too decided to go to the land of many opportunities, and in 1883 he came to the United States of America. In the vicinity of Aplington and Ackley he lived the remainder of his life. In 1891 he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Smidt. Out of this union seven children were born.

After retiring from active farming he lived the declining years of his life in Ackley, where he died after a severe but brief illness of but two and one-half days. He passed away on March 12, 1927 at the age of 69 years, 3 months and 21 days.

His wife preceded him in 1918 and a daughter, Mrs. Hilko VanDike in July of last year. There survive him his children Jerry, Fred, Henry, John, Seebe and Anne, eight grandchildren, one brother Tiebe of Aplington and many other relatives and friends. Funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon in the West Friesland Presbyterian church, conducted by the pastor Henry Johnson, assisted by Rev. Krafft of Ackley. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church.
