Wilburta Nelle Carr, age 89, of the Presbyterian Village, Ackley, Iowa, was born the daughter of Karl Bremeke and Hazel (Davis) Meickley on February 13, 1920, at the Marshalltown Deaconess Hospital after her mother and her three year old sister, Marcia, had made the train trip from their ranch in Wibaux, Montana.
They returned to the Montana ranch where the family lived until 1923. As Marcia reached school age, the lack of a public school in the vicinity prompted the family to move to a Meickley farm near Aplington, Iowa, where the family continued to farm.
Both girls attended the nearby one room country school through the eighth grade, and they also both attended the Aplington Consolidated High School where Wilburta graduated in 1937.
She attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa and graduated in Home Economics and Child Development in 1941. Upon graduation she escorted her great-aunt Nelle Crapser to her home in California where Wilburta met and married her husband, Dain Demarest Carr. Wilburta was united in marriage with Dain Carr on October 4, 1942, in Santa Monica, California.
They established a home in Westchester, California and raised three children, Penelope Anne (1943), Teressa Ione (1944) and David Emmett (1947). She participated actively in all the business of growing families; PTA, Bluebirds, Camp Fire Girls, Boy Scouts, Little League, and hosting a German foreign exchange student for a year. Wilburta taught school in the Watts area of Los Angeles, California from 1968 until retiring in 1975.
The tragedy of the family’s life was the death of David at the age of 27 from Cystic Fibrosis. Dain and Wilburta lived on their farm near Ackley and wintered at their home in Playa del Rey, California, until 2004 when Dain died with cancer. Wilburta continued to live a full and interesting life alternating seasons between the Presbyterian Village and her home in California.
Wilburta’s parents Hazel and Karl Meickley were long time Aplington residents, as were her sister, Marcia Uhlenhopp and brother-in-law, Maurice Uhlenhopp. Her maternal grandparents were Fred and Teressa Davis of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and her paternal grandparents were Johanna and Ludwig Meickley of Marshalltown, Iowa.
Wilburta died Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dain Carr; and one son, David Carr.
Wilburta is survived by her two daughters, Penny Wells of San Rafael, California, and Teressa O’Caer of Eugene, Oregon; one grandson, Jesse Harter of Portland, Oregon; two nephews, Kent Uhlenhopp and Eldon Uhlenhopp, and their children.
Graveside Services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 23, 2010, at the West Friesland Cemetery in Ackley.
Memorials may be directed to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at www.cff.org or her daughter Penny Wells, 229 Courtright Rd., San Rafael, CA 94901.
