Rites Held For C. VanNingen, 99, Born At Wellsburg

Carrie VanNingen passed away at the Brookings Hospital at Brookings, South Dakota on Nov. 29, 1970, at the age of 99 years, 9 months, 13 days after being hospitalized since Sept. 8, 1970.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 2, 1970 at the United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. preceded by a family service at 1:30 p.m.

The Rev. Edwin Hessel officiated. Mrs. Marilyn Lang and Mrs. Alvin Schmidt sang two songs, and Mrs. Edwin Hessel was organist.

Interment was at Fairview Cemetery with pallbearers Ralph Anderson, Virgil Nielsen, Clarence Simmons, Roger Simmons, David Hicks and Russell Hicks.

Carrie Benz was born Feb. 16, 1871 at Wellsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Matthew and Rosy Benz. She was united in marriage to Benjamin VanNingen on Feb. 1, 1892. They lived in Grundy Center, Iowa. To this union two sons were born. In 1896, Mr. VanNingen was killed in an accident.

In 1911, Mrs. VanNingen and her two sons moved to White, South Dakota. She continued to work in several motherless homes and cared for invalids.

She united with the Methodist Church in Grundy Center, Iowa and later transferred her membership to the White Methodist Church.

The last 16 years she was a resident at the Terry-Parkview Rest Home at Volga, South Dakota.

She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Wm. of Brookings, three granddaughters, two daughters-in-law, 12 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren, besides nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Clarence, a grandson and daughter-in-law, her parents, sisters and brothers.

Friends and relatives attending the funeral were from Hopkins, Ruthton, and Hendricks, Minn., Brandon, Sioux Falls, Davis, Chancellor, Corona, Watertown, Hazel, Dell Rapids, Brookings, Volga, Astoria, Estelline and White, South Dakota. The deceased was an aunt of the Bausmans and Eberlines.
