William Friend Services Held
William L. Friend was born the son of David and Ada Bailey Friend on December 15, 1900. He attended school in Tama where he was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reyhons.
On December 7, 1935, he was united in marriage to Hattie M. Schultz. William was a retired farm laborer, working for several area farmers. He worked at the Conrad Creamery, at the Berry Hardware in Conrad from 1940 to 1958, operated William L. Friend Plumbing 1950's to 60's, Acco and Tomco Seed in Conrad, supervised own bean crew several years, and drove Conrad school bus for many years.
On Saturday, May 23, he died of congestive heart failure at the Grandview Heights in Marshalltown where he had resided the past few days. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie in 1989; one son, Ronald Lee Friend; his parents; 2 sisters; 2 brothers; 2 half-sisters; and 2 half-brothers.
Survivors include one son, Charles D. Friend of Conrad, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 27, at 1:30 p.m. at the Conrad United Methodist Church with the Rev. Helmer Peterson officiating. Casket bearers were Larry Reel, Verlin McAllister, Leonard Raum, J. Gilbert Lair, Jerry Mann, and Dale Shirk. Burial was in the Conrad Cemetery.
Johnston Funeral Home in Conrad was in charge of the arrangements.
